Chapter 18: No More Lying

Lou read the headline standing in the kitchen with his coat still on.

He read it all the way through, down to the part about his "history of financial desperation."

Then he folded the phone shut and set it on the counter, very gently.

"Let them print it," he said.

"Dad," said Sean.

"I've been called worse by better people. Sit down, all of you. I'm making eggs."

We sat.

Lou cracked eggs into a pan one-handed, and nobody said anything until the plates were on the table.

Lexi had moved in on Saturday, with a gym bag and one pair of shoes.

She was sitting on a folding chair that Cal had fixed, because nobody had told her where else to sit.

She pushed her eggs around her plate, and then she put her fork down.

"I have to show you something," she said.

She took a phone out of her bag, one she had bought at a drugstore, and laid it in the middle of the table.

"I took photos of this from Gordon's safe. Before I ran."

It was an eight-page trust document with Gordon's mother's name at the top.

Sean leaned over it with a mouthful of toast.

"Read it out loud," he said. "Skip the lawyer words."

"It pays out three hundred and forty million dollars," Lexi said. "To the blood granddaughter of Gordon's mother."
