That night I borrowed Sean's phone and went to sit on the fire stairs.

He handed it over without asking why.

"Don't call anyone expensive," he said. "It's on the cheap plan."

I dialed the number from the note and counted six rings.

A whisper answered.

"Hello? Who is this?"

"It's Lena."

I heard a door close on her end.

"I only have a minute," Lexi said. "This is the housekeeper's phone, and she's downstairs. I'm so sorry about today. They told me what to say. They said if I didn't, you'd take everything from me."

"Take what?"

"The house. My mother's name. They said my mother died and you would make sure I got nothing."

I had not known her mother had died.

"I didn't know her," I said. "I didn't know you."

"I know," she said, and she sounded like she was crying. "I don't think you're a thief. I think they wanted you out before something."

"Before what?"

"I don't know. I heard Mr. Thornquist tell the lawyer your kit came back two years ago. He said it twice. Then he saw me in the hall and stopped."

"What kit?"

"I don't know," she said again. "I have to go."

The line went dead.

I sat on the cold step for a while holding Sean's phone.

When I went back in, Lou was at the kitchen table with a shoebox open in front of him.

He had not turned on the overhead light, only the small lamp over the stove.
