Chapter 15: The Toast

We did not sleep.

Kirk drove us to Bridgeport with both hands on the wheel and did not say a word until the garage door rolled down behind us.

Then he stood in the dark of the bay with his back to me.

"I wanted to hug him," he said. "In the garden, with you standing there."

"I saw."

"I'm not asking you to forgive that."

"Good," I said. "Because I'm angry."

He turned around.

His face looked raw.

"Not because you wanted to," I said. "Because you thought I'd hate you for it."

"Don't you?"

I crossed the concrete floor and put my forehead against his chest.

His arms came around me slowly, and he waited for me to say no.

I did not say no.

I stayed there with his heart going under my ear until the windows turned gray.

At six I called the lawyer who had lost my appeal.

I used the garage phone, and I told her only that I had a recording and a question.

She was quiet for a long time.

"The detective on your case joined the Winslade Foundation board two years ago," she said. "If you take it to the police in Darien, he reads it first."

"The state police?"

"They'll want a body, a witness, and a warrant. You have a voice on a phone. Sheridan will say it's an actor."

"Chadwick is legally dead. You can't arrest a man who has a death certificate."

"Then what do I do?" I said.

"Bring him out where a hundred people see his face," she said. "Anything less and he goes back in the cottage and you go back inside."

I hung up and stood with the receiver in my hand.

Kirk was leaning in the doorway of the office with two paper cups of coffee.
