Chapter 6: The Guest Suite

I said yes to the car because Bex said yes first.

"One week," she told Honor at the curb, "and I'm coming with her."

"Of course, dear," Honor said. "There's a room for you both."

The guest suite at the lake house had a bed the size of my whole bedroom and a window that looked at black water.

Honor tucked a second blanket around my legs herself.

"My son is a hard man," she said, sitting on the edge of the mattress. "His father made him that way. But he has a good heart under all of it. Give him time."

"I'm not here to give him anything."

"I know." She patted my hand. "Sleep."

She left the lamp on for me.

Bex was already snoring in the second bed by ten.

I lay awake with the three ultrasound pictures on my chest and listened to the gallop in my head.

At midnight I got hungry.

The house was dark and quiet, and the kitchen was down a long hall lit only by the glow from an open refrigerator.

A man stood in front of it in gray sweatpants and a white T-shirt, drinking milk straight from the carton.

It was Rhys.

He lowered the carton when he saw me.

"I live here on Thursdays," he said. "My mother likes the table full."

"You live in the tower."

"I sleep here when she asks. She asked."

I stood in the doorway in Bex's old sweatshirt and wool socks, with my hair a mess.

He looked at me, and I felt it all the way down my legs.

"I'm hungry," I said.

"Sit down."
