Chapter 13: My Grandmother
The judge called a recess and left the bench without looking back.
Nobody else moved.
My grandmother came down the aisle on Matthew's arm, one slow step at a time.
She didn't look at the counsel's table.
She didn't look at the psychiatrist, gathering his file with shaking hands.
She looked at me the whole way, and her face didn't change once.
She stopped in front of my wheelchair.
She was shorter than I remembered. Her eyes were exactly the same.
"Adele," she said.
"Hello, Grandmother."
She let go of Matthew.
She put her cold, dry hands on both sides of my face and held it.
"You're thin," she said. "You're filthy. Who did your hair?"
"Nobody did my hair."
"I can see that."
Her thumbs moved once across my cheekbones.
Then her chin started to shake, and she pulled my head down against her coat.
It smelled of cedar and the same lily of the valley she'd worn my whole life.
I held on to her.
I didn't cry. I was afraid if I started I wouldn't stand up again.
