Chapter 24: The End Room
Ward C was empty on Thursday morning.
The last patients had gone to other hospitals the week before, and the nurses' desk had no one behind it.
The lemon shortbread tin still sat on the counter, gold and dented, and nobody had had the heart to throw it out.
I threw it out as we passed.
Leanne walked.
She had a cane in her left hand and her brother's arm under her right, and she had told the hospital she would take the elevator and then her own feet.
Posy walked beside her in the yellow raincoat, holding the hem of Leanne's sleeve.
"It's very long," Posy said, looking down the hall.
"It's twenty-two steps," Leanne said. "I counted them for five years."
"Do you want to count them now?"
"I think I'd like to, yes."
She counted aloud, in her cracked rasp, and Posy counted with her.
I walked behind them with my hand in the pocket of my coat, and I did not trust myself to speak.
Room 12 went by on the left, with its door standing open.
I did not look in.
At the far end of the hall the last door stood closed.
It had a small laminated sign on it, a single word in black letters: STORAGE.
Leanne stopped in front of it.
"Somebody decided to put a sign on this door," she said.
"Someone else can decide," Zachary said.
He took a screwdriver from his back pocket.
