Chapter 13: The Station Steps
They took Colton out through the lobby in front of thirty of his own employees.
Nobody filmed it on purpose. Everyone filmed it anyway.
By noon the clip had been shared four thousand times, and by one o'clock I was standing on the steps of the downtown police station with Elliot and the lawyer.
She had said her fifth word of the day: "Wait."
"For what?" I asked.
"For the bail hearing," Elliot said. "They'll hold him until a judge sets it."
"And if the judge lets him go?"
"Then he goes home to his mother's, and we make sure he can't touch another dollar."
A silver car pulled up to the curb.
The woman who climbed out of it was small and sixty and dressed for church, in a navy suit and a pearl pin.
I had met Colton's mother exactly three times.
Each time she had called me "the girl."
She came up the steps with her handbag held in front of her, and four people with phones came up behind her.
"There she is," she said, loudly.
"Mrs. Brewer," Elliot said.
"Don't you speak to me."
She stopped one step below me, so we stood eye to eye.
"My son built that company with his bare hands," she said.
"Your son built it with my money," I said.
"You are a jealous, vindictive girl, and you had him arrested on a Sunday morning in front of his staff."
"He stole four hundred and twelve thousand dollars."
"He borrowed it!"
"He bought a boat."
A man behind her lifted his phone higher.
Colton's mother pointed one finger at my face.
"You moved into his home, you ate his food, and you wore his ring."
"I paid for the groceries, the trips and half the furniture," I said. "I have the receipts."
