Chapter 23: Toast
They were gone two hours.
I scraped Freddie's croissants into the bin, re-did the whole bake, and served the Saturday queue with one eye on the end of the parade.
At half eleven they came back round the corner together.
Freddie had his hands in his pockets.
Lev's eyes were red.
Neither of them said a word to me.
Lev came behind the counter, kissed the top of my head, put on Dad's spare apron, and started boxing tarts.
"Well?" I said.
"Well what?"
"What did he say?"
Lev looked at Freddie across the shop.
Freddie looked at the ceiling.
"Private," Lev said. "Between me and your brother."
"Lev Sokolov..."
"He made me swear on the river."
I threw a tea towel at both of them.
On Friday, at the second market of the street's own, Freddie climbed onto a chair outside the launderette.
He had a pint in his hand.
He'd tied his tie round his head.
"Oi!" he shouted. "Ropery Parade! Two minutes!"
