Chapter 21: The Suit
Barrett opened the envelope at the table.
He read the first page while his burger went cold.
Glenn leaned over his shoulder and read it too, moving his lips.
"Cuthbert versus Ivers," Glenn said. "Defamation. Two million dollars?"
"He says I lied about him," Barrett said. "In print. With malice."
"You printed his own emails!"
"I know, Dad."
Glenn stood up so fast his chair went over.
"Over my dead body. I'll call my lawyer. I'll call every lawyer in Philadelphia. I coached half of them."
"Glenn," my mother said. "Pick up the chair."
He picked up the chair.
Barrett folded the papers back into the envelope and set it beside his plate.
"Everything in that column is true," he said. "He knows it. He wants it to cost me money to say so."
"How much money?" I said.
He looked at me.
"Whatever it costs," he said.
On Tuesday Dane came to my line himself.
At five o'clock there were twenty people on the sidewalk outside Low Tide, waiting for the doors.
