Chapter 31: Thanksgiving

"Mom, the whole county knows how we met," I said. "It was on Facebook."

"The whole county knows about a window." She dropped a potato in the pot. "Nobody knows how it started. Not even me."

"You know it started at your wedding."

"I know I called his name across the sand, and he came around that tent with lipstick on his beard."

I nearly peeled my thumb.

"You saw that?"

"Honey, I was a librarian for thirty years. I see everything. I just don't say."

Through the window, Glenn was explaining to Barrett how you lower a turkey into hot oil.

"Slow," he was saying. "Like a baby into a bath."

"Dad, you're going to burn the porch down."

My mother handed me another potato.

"So," she said. "Will you tell it?"

"Maybe."

"At the table. Where I can watch Glenn's face."

Frankie and her husband came at one with two pies and a green bean casserole from a can.

"From a can," Frankie said, holding it up at the door. "On purpose. As a bit."

Glenn's rolls were his mother's recipe, like the potato salad.
