I closed the box.
"Sit down," I said.
He sat down at Glenn's kitchen table.
I stayed standing, with the box in my fist.
"Explain," I said. "All of it. Numbers."
"I sold the condo in Philadelphia," he said. "That was the down payment."
"He's carrying the rest himself, for thirty years, at the same forty-five hundred a month you were paying him."
"So I'm still paying forty-five hundred a month."
"To him. Not to me. You don't owe me one dollar."
"Why would he sell it to you?"
"Because I asked him what it would take to keep it a restaurant forever," Barrett said.
"He said, 'Make sure she owns it, and make sure I get a cup every Labor Day.'"
I heard my mother and Glenn laughing in the living room, the TV going.
"Your name's not on it," I said.
"No."
"Put it on."
"No."
"Barrett."
"Hattie, listen to me."
He leaned his elbows on the table and looked up at me.
"A man gave my station away once," he said. "On a Saturday. While I was in the burn unit."
