Chapter 19: The Offer
"Stay in your room until morning," I said.
It came out on its own, three months of habit.
She laughed softly on the line, the way my mother used to laugh at my father's jokes.
"You and that card," she said. "You taped over it, and you still say it."
Across the lobby, the doctor sat by the fire in a dry flannel shirt with his daughter asleep against him.
Neil looked up from the bench when he saw my face.
I turned my back on all of them.
"Say it, then," I said into the phone.
"I'm the mother who remembers you, Meg."
Her voice was low and clear, and close.
"I know your father's green Ford and the pea soup and the Ferris wheel line," she said.
"I'll know your birthday. I'll come to your wedding and know whose it is. I'll hold your babies and say their names right."
I held the edge of the desk.
"Put me out of a door, and you get the other one back," she said.
