Chapter 20: Under the Door
I slid out of bed and picked up the envelope without waking her.
It was thick and held three things.
I read them on the porch, in my jeans, with the sun coming up over the highway.
The first was a letter on hospital letterhead, one paragraph long.
It said that Dr. Sabine Aldous resigned her position as chief of cardiac surgery, effective at once, and would hand over every case file to the review board.
She had signed it at the bottom with the same square hand that had signed our wedding certificate.
The second was a copy of the sworn statement.
I did not read it again.
The third was a legal document with a county seal in the corner.
It was a deed of gift.
I read the first line twice.
The donor, Sabine Aldous, had given every dollar she had saved in nine years to the county hospital in the town where I grew up.
The money was for a new cardiac bay, with a surgical team and a helicopter pad.
Beneath it was a line of type.
The unit would be named the Wynn Cardiac Bay.
A card was clipped to the corner.
It said: You told me once he was forty minutes from a surgeon. Now nobody there will be. I am not asking for anything. Please let his name be on it.
I sat down on the porch step.
The screen door creaked.
Deirdre came out in my jacket with her hair loose, holding two cups.
"You're up," she said.
"She was here."
"I heard tires." She set a cup next to me. "I thought it was a trucker. Truckers don't leave at dawn without pancakes."
