Chapter 16: The Missing Page
"Sit down," said my grandmother, without turning her head.
I did not sit.
From the chair I could see every face at the long table, and every hand, and the twenty that were still in the air.
"Great-aunt," I said. "You called this table. May I speak to it before it votes?"
I said it in plain words, in a child's voice, and I let it carry.
From the foot of the table came the dry old voice.
"The eldest of the blood recognizes the child."
"She has not been asked," said Marguerite. "Rule one."
"She has been asked by the one who called the table," said the great-aunt. "Rule one has never outranked that."
She lifted one finger from the arm of her chair.
"Go on, Linnet."
I unbuttoned my cardigan and drew out the folded sheet.
The room watched my hands.
"This was behind the sixth frame in the hall," I said. "The thick one that hangs crooked."
"You have all walked past it every day of your lives."
