Chapter 17: The Doctor Sweats
The great-aunt held out her hand, and the uncle carried the page and the Book down the table to her.
She did not hurry.
She laid the page on her knee and tilted it toward the nearest candle.
"Look at the paper," she said to the room. "Hold the Book's last leaf beside it."
The uncle did.
"Same weave, same thickness. The brown at the edge of the ink is the same brown."
"A forger can buy old paper. He cannot buy this."
She ran a fingertip along the left-leaning line.
"Nobody alive writes with the slant to the left and drags a hand through wet ink. Nobody but the woman who wrote the rest."
"Felix," I said.
He was already running before the name was out.
He came back with the sixth frame in his thin arms.
The uncle took it from him.
The housekeeper stood behind him, wiping her eyes with her apron.
