Chapter 15: The Arrest

I did not cry in the clinic.

I walked into the parking lot with the report in my fist and told the aide to find me a federal agent.

"Miss Wisniewski?"

"A baby was taken from a hotel in New York twenty-one years ago," I said. "Somebody opened a case. Somebody never closed it."

The aide's eyebrows rose, then settled.

"The embassy has a file number," he said. "Your Highness, we kept it for exactly this day."

"I'm not Your Highness."

"No, miss. Not yet."

He made the call on the roof of the town car, standing in the leftover rain.

I stood next to him and listened to a stranger's voice say my name.

"Two people are waiting at a private airfield," I said, when the phone was held out to me. "They think a man is about to wire them seven hundred and fifty thousand dollars."

"Ma'am, how do you know they're still there?"

"Because they're my parents," I said. "They have never left a room with money still in it."

Eli sat on the curb with his sticker and listened to every word.

"Are they going to jail?" he asked.

I crouched in front of him.
