Chapter 17: Her Father

The little stair behind Eli's wardrobe was so narrow that I had to turn sideways.

"Mind the fourth step," Tristan whispered below me. "It sings."

"How do you know about the fourth step?"

"I was seven. I hid in this wall for a whole day."

"Why?"

"My uncle was giving a speech."

I almost laughed, and I was furious that I almost did.

Behind me, in the room above, the nurse slept in an armchair beside Eli's bed.

I had told her I was going to wash my face.

I had checked that his hand was warm, and I had checked it twice.

Tristan had come to my door at midnight, after the guards changed.

He had stood in the hall, in a dark sweater with a guard's gray jacket over it.

I had thought about slamming the door.

Then he had spoken.

"He is asking for you."

So here I was, going down a wall in the dark behind the man who had paid a million dollars for me.

"I'm not doing this for you," I said.

"I know."

"I'm still angry."

"You should be."

"Don't agree with me. It's annoying."

He glanced back, and in the dark I saw his mouth curve.

"Yes, Your Highness," he said.

"Don't."
