Chapter 20: Eli
I walked straight at the captain.
I didn't run.
Every pair of eyes in the hall followed me.
"Look at this," I said, loud enough for the gallery. "Everyone look. That is a captain of the guard, carrying a nine-year-old boy by the mouth."
The captain stopped.
His eyes flicked to the regent for orders.
"He was lost, Highness," the captain said. "I am returning him to you."
"Then put him down."
"Presently."
He took a step backward.
Then another, toward the open doors.
"Uncle," I said, without looking away from the captain. "Tell him to put my brother down."
The regent stood with his hand on his chair.
I watched him do the sum.
Two hundred witnesses.
A boy.
A door.
"Captain," he said, almost kindly. "Escort the child to his room. Gently."
The captain bowed.
He turned and walked out of the hall at a steady pace with Eli under his arm, and six guards fell in around him and closed the doors.
