Chapter 10: The Dying Don

Lorenzo's POV

Livia typed the words with her thumbs shaking.

"He's sick. The doctor is here. Come."

I stood behind her chair and read it over her shoulder.

I had offered to send it myself.

"She should hear it from me," Livia had said. "She'd know if it was anyone else."

Donata's answer came back in under a minute.

"I'm coming. Don't let them move him. Don't tell anyone. Be brave, my love."

Livia put the phone face down on the desk.

She did not cry.

She sat with her hands flat on the wood, looking at the vial, and I wanted very badly to put my fist through a wall.

"Leave us," I told the consigliere.

He went.

"Say it," Livia said.

"Say what?"

"Whatever you're thinking. You've been thinking it since the knot."

I thought about it.

I had learned long ago that the truth does not need me to be gentle, only to be accurate.

"I'm thinking I let you sleep in my bed while that was in your luggage," I said. "If I had touched the lining a day sooner, I'd have known on Tuesday."

"You didn't know."

"I should have."

"You aren't God," she said, and almost laughed.

I touched the back of her neck.

She leaned into my palm for a second, eyes closed.

Then she opened them, and they were steady again.

"They'll be here before breakfast," she said. "Mama will want to see it herself."

"Then we'll let her."

I was put to bed at five that morning.

I did not enjoy it.

My doctor, who has stitched men I would rather not name, arranged pillows behind my shoulders and drew the curtains and pinned a thermometer to my wrist for effect.
