Chapter 5: Where the Heels Stopped
The pistol was still in the drawer of my bedside table on Thursday morning.
I had slept with the drawer shut and my hand on the wood.
A man who hands his hostage a loaded gun has either decided to trust her or decided to see what she does with it.
I had not touched it, and I did not know yet which of those he wanted to find out.
At nine they brought Ilaria home.
She came up the front steps on her brother's arm, with a white band over both eyes and a nurse behind her carrying a bag of drops.
"Where is she?" she asked the hall. "Where's my hostage?"
"Here," I said from the stairs.
"Good. Come read to me. The nurse's voice puts me to sleep."
Her room was on the second floor, full of green silk and old books.
She lay back on the bed and gave me a paperback with a cracked spine.
It was a romance, and the heroine's name was Beatrice.
I read for an hour.
Ilaria laughed in the right places and groaned in the wrong ones, and once she said, "He's an idiot, she should leave him," and I said, "She won't," and she said, "I know. That's why I'm reading it."
When the nurse went out for lunch, she was quiet for a while.
Then she found my wrist in the dark and held it.
"Livia. Can I tell you something I haven't told my brother?"
"Tell me."
"I was sitting in my chair when your sister came." Her thumb moved against my pulse. "I heard her heels on the marble. They came close, and then they stopped. Right beside me."
