Chapter 11: What He Did

Nolan told them at dawn, before either of them asked.

They were sitting on the stone steps of the river dock under Brine, in last night's clothes, with three mugs of Lorna's coffee going cold on the step between them.

The sun was coming up pink behind the bridge.

Gulls cried over the water.

Nolan held his phone in both hands.

"The paper is fake," he said.

"The line is changed.

"But there's a real thing under it, and you ought to hear it from me."

Skye put her mug down.

Ford turned his head.

"Three years ago I was a sergeant, military police, at a base in Georgia.

"A captain started working on a private.

"She was a private, and she'd told him no and kept telling him.

"He cornered her in a supply room, and I got there at the end."

Nolan's voice stayed flat.

It was the only way he could say it.

"I hit him.

"More than once.

"He lost teeth.

"The Army let him resign, quietly, and gave me a general discharge, because they couldn't print what he'd done without printing what I'd done."

"Nolan," Ford said.

"I didn't regret it.

"I don't.

"I just didn't think anyone who ran a place like Brine would want a man who'd done that."

Neither of them spoke for a moment.

A boat horn sounded far out on the harbor.

Then Skye reached over, took his phone out of his hands, and put it face down on the stone.
