Chapter 24: Salt Kiss
Nolan woke on the dock before the sun.
Someone had dragged the shack's quilts out onto the boards.
The three of them lay under them in a heap, with the cold gray creek lapping the pilings below.
The tide had been in all night.
The causeway was a line of silver under a foot of water, and no car was crossing it before breakfast.
Ford lay on his left, asleep, his glasses folded on a plank and his bare head turned into the quilt.
Skye was on his right, awake, her chin on her crossed arms, watching the east.
Her braid had come loose in the night, and the wind lifted it off her back.
She wore nothing but his shirt.
"Morning," she said, without turning.
"It's barely light."
"It's the best part."
He looked at her.
The first thin line of orange was coming up out of the marsh.
It lit the peeling skin on her nose and the brass ring on her finger.
