Chapter 10: The Photo

Nolan was waiting on level three of the parking garage at seven fifteen the next morning.

He leaned against a white pillar next to my car, in a charcoal overcoat, with his rings catching the fluorescent light.

I almost turned and walked back to the elevator.

"Don't," he said pleasantly. "You'll want to see this."

He held out his phone.

On the screen, in grainy telephoto, a woman in a gray dress stepped off a green-door porch at dawn.

Her shoes were in her hand.

Behind her, in the doorway, a man in a gray sweater caught her wrist and kissed her.

It was very clear whose faces they were.

My stomach folded in half.

"Delete that," I said.

"I'm not going to."

"You followed me to his house."

"I followed my client's daughter to a man's house, which is an ordinary precaution." He tucked the phone away. "You were at that door for eleven hours, Jillian. That is not research."

"It's none of your business."

"It's entirely my business. Your father paid for your education and your mother's pills, and what he asked in return was one folder. One. And you've been in that man's bed instead."

"That's not what happened."

"The picture says otherwise."

He smiled.

"Here is how this goes. You bring me the board minutes and the buy-out file by tomorrow night. I delete the photograph, and nobody in the world sees how you got them."
