Chapter 12: Ruddock

I was in Burke's office at seven the next morning, before the floor was awake.

He came in at seven twenty with a coffee in each hand and stopped when he saw my face.

"What happened?"

"Close the door."

He did, slowly.

I stood in front of his desk and said it all in one breath, because if I stopped I would never start again.

"My name isn't Lowe. It's Ruddock. Jillian Ruddock. My father is Desmond Ruddock, and he sent me here to find proof that you ruined his company."

The coffee cups went down on the desk, very carefully.

Burke said nothing.

The silence was so long that I heard the elevator ding in the hall.

"I'm wearing a recorder," I said. "I've been wearing it for two weeks."

I took the pen out of my pocket and put it on his desk.

"I'm not asking you to forgive me."

"Good," he said.

His voice was calm, and it was terrible.

"Because I don't think I can."

"I know."

"Did you sleep with me to get the file?"

"No."

"Look at me and say that."

I looked at him.

"The night before I knew your face, no," I said. "After that my father ordered me to get close, and I hated it. But the nights were mine. I wanted you. That part was never his."

"That's convenient."

"It's true. You can ask the recorder."

He picked up the pen and turned it over in his fingers.
