Chapter 21: The Gala
"You look well," my father said, rising from the bench without the cane.
"Don't talk to her," said Burke.
"I'm talking to my daughter."
Desmond took an envelope from his coat.
"Thursday, the Ruddock Foundation dinner. Two hundred guests, the press, and the families you left behind."
He held the envelope out to me.
It was cream, heavy, with my name on it in gold.
"Sit at my table, Jillian, and stand beside me when I speak.
Or I'll name you from that stage, and tell two hundred people exactly what you've been doing in Mr. Hartwell's bed."
"You already did that," I said. "Everyone has the photo."
"Not the words."
I took the envelope, because he wanted me to refuse it.
"I'll be there," I said.
Burke's hand tightened on my back.
He didn't speak until my father had gone out through the revolving door.
"No," he said.
"Yes."
"He'll humiliate you."
"He'll try."
"Jillian."
"I already have a recording, Burke."
