Chapter 19: No Strings
Ines's POV
He wrote it in four lines, in his terrible slanted handwriting, on a sheet of yellow legal paper.
I read it upside down from across the table.
I, Dexter Lowell, assign to Ines Navarro everything that comes back to me of my shares in Lowell Systems. She owes me nothing for it. I ask her for nothing.
He signed it.
Ben signed under him as a witness, and dated it, and looked at me with his eyebrows up.
Dex slid the page across the table.
"That's all of it," he said. "If Valeria's sale ever comes apart, if a judge gives them back, if MacAvoy sells, whatever is left of the fifty-two percent goes to you. I've already given away my title."
"Dex."
"There aren't any strings. You can burn the page. You can vote the shares against me. You can sit in this chair and fire me." He kept his eyes on mine. "I'm not buying anything with it. I'm not asking for your money. I'm not asking for you."
I picked up the sheet and read it again.
I read everything twice, now.
I had learned that on a kitchen floor in July, standing over a page of his.
In July he had moved everything we had without a word.
Now he had moved the last thing he owned without a word either, and this time he had given all of it to me.
Something in my chest that had been clenched for eight months came undone.
I had told myself he picked Valeria's math over me because I had stopped being worth the cost.
I had believed it every morning, in the basement, with my tea.
