Chapter 11: Take Me
Lu Baichuan asked on the twentieth night, with the door shut and the lamps low and his eyes fixed on the floor.
"I want you to take me."
Qin Heyan put down his book.
They were in the pavilion's wide bed, and for a week they had done everything but this.
Lu had kept his promise, to the letter.
He had not coughed in front of Qin since the night with the sash.
He had been sunny, and quick to laugh, and he had touched Qin as if each time might be the last.
"Say it again," Qin said.
"Take me. Please." Lu looked up, red to his ears. "I want to feel you do it."
"Why now?"
"Because I want to."
"That isn't an answer."
"Heyan."
Lu's mouth twisted.
"I've been first in everything for ten years. Everybody leans on me. Everybody waits for me to say what comes next. I'm so tired."
Qin looked at him.
For the first time he saw, plainly, the thing under the grin.
It was not weakness.
It was a man who had carried too much for too long, asking for one night of being carried.
"Lie back," Qin said gently.
Lu lay back.
Qin took his time.
He kissed him until Lu's breath came short.
He kissed him all over, the scars on his ribs, the pale seam of his forearm, the tender skin inside his knee.
Every place he kissed, Lu shivered.
"You're doing so well," Qin murmured. "You're letting me look."
"Is that. Is that good?"
"It's very good."
Lu's eyes went bright.
He bit his lip, and a tear slid out of the corner of one eye and into his hair.
"Sorry," he whispered.
"Don't be."
"I don't know why."
"I do." Qin kissed the tear away. "Because nobody has told you that you're good for letting go. You are. You're so good, Baichuan."
