Chapter 4: The Footage

Trent's smile stayed on his face, but nothing behind it moved.

"Miss Kingsford?" Tiffany said. "That's impossible. She's a nobody. She came in off the street."

The manager did not even turn his head.

"Miss Kingsford is the only granddaughter of Edmund Kingsford," he said. "This whole building belongs to her family."

I looked down at the woman whose hand I had been holding all day.

She said nothing.

She stood in her borrowed wedding gown, and her face showed no surprise at all.

The bracelet on her wrist caught the light.

"Miss Kingsford," the manager said, almost pleading. "Whatever this man said to you, I'll have him removed."

"He said I stole his ring," Cosima said quietly.

Her voice was steady and a little tired.

"I didn't, but I would like it settled properly. Do you have cameras in this shop?"

"Every corner," the manager said.

"Then show everyone, please," she said. "I'd like it on the big screen."

Trent let out a thin laugh. "That's not necessary. I probably dropped it. We don't need to make a scene."

"You're the one who started the scene," I said.

The manager snapped his fingers, and an assistant ran to the counter.

A moment later, the wide screen behind the wedding gowns lit up with a gray picture of the shop from above.

It showed Tiffany beside the mannequin with her card in her hand.

It showed Trent next to her, and the ring on his finger.

Then it showed Trent glancing around the room, slipping the ring off with his thumb, and dropping it into the open mouth of Tiffany's handbag.

He did it so smoothly it took a second to understand.

The customers made a small noise together.

Trent's face lost all its color.
