Chapter 5: Papers
Cosima would not go home with her grandfather.
"I'll stay with Perry until Saturday," she said in the shop. "Two of your guards can wait at his gate if you like."
Edmund Kingsford stared at her for a long moment.
Then he took a long breath, and he pressed his lips together.
"Two guards," he said. "And you will call me every night."
"Every night," Cosima said, and she kissed his cheek.
He gave me one more look as we left, and it said that he would be watching.
My father's house was a plain gray brick on the east side, and the lights were on in every window.
A long black sedan sat in the driveway with a driver asleep at the wheel.
I put Cosima's hand on my arm, and we went up the steps together.
In the living room, my father sat in his old armchair with his hands between his knees.
Across from him on the sofa sat Tiffany's father, a heavy man in a silk tie, and a notary beside him with a leather folder.
"Perry," my father said, and he stood. "He wouldn't leave. I told him you had changed your mind, and he said he'd wait."
Tiffany's father did not stand.
"Your boy has made an enormous mistake," he said. "My daughter called me crying from the car. Insulted in public. Her fiance's cousin accused and humiliated."
"My father is not signing," I said.
"Martin signed in principle two years ago. The final papers are only a formality."
"There is no formality," I said. "There is the deal, and there is the end of the deal."
