Chapter 18: Hired Wife

The post had four hundred thousand views by Monday morning.

It had whole clauses copied word for word from a paper that only three people had ever held.

It said Heath Garrison had bought a librarian to keep his father's company.

It said I had been paid, and it quoted a number.

The number was made up, and so was the quote from "a close family friend."

Bridget never signed it.

She didn't need to.

By nine, Eleanor's cousin on the Garrison board had emailed every director.

He called the marriage a sham and asked for a vote to void Heath's shares.

The principal met me at the front door of Larkfield Elementary with her coat still on.

"I don't believe a word of it," she said. "But the parents are in the library, and they want to talk."

Twenty adults stood among the picture-book shelves with their arms folded.

The children were outside at lunch recess, and I could hear them screaming happily through the windows.

A mother in the front row held up her phone.

"Is it true you were paid to marry him?" she said.

"Is it true you married him for his money?" said another.

"We just want to know who's reading to our kids," said a father.

Four teachers stood along the back wall.

None of them looked at me.

I opened my mouth, and the library door opened behind me.
