I didn't open the envelope in the elevator.
I didn't open it in the lobby, or in the parking garage, or in the car on the forty-minute drive home.
I held it in my lap the whole way with both hands.
Heath drove.
It was daytime, and he drove the way he always did, with his eyes on the road and both hands exactly where they should be.
He didn't say anything, and neither did I.
At the house he went into his study.
I followed him and closed the door.
He stood behind his father's desk and waited for me to speak.
"What's in it?" I said.
"A petition to end the marriage. My lawyer drew it up. I signed it this morning."
"It says the fifteen months were met and the parties part with no claim on each other."
"It says you keep your name, your savings and your cardigans."
"And the house?"
"I'll find another one. You can have this one for as long as you want."
