Chapter 20: The Ryman
The Ryman held two thousand people, and every pew was full.
I stood in the dark of the stage-left wing with the loaner Gibson on my back and a crew pass around my neck.
Emmylou had put me on the list as her drum tech.
Hudson was up in the video booth at the back of the balcony.
He'd trained the Ryman's video man two summers ago, and the man owed him a favor.
Mr. Rayburn sat in the front pew, center, silver hair shining under the house lights.
Breckin came on to a roar that shook the stained glass.
He sang "Rented Tux" first.
My song, in his mouth, mic three bright.
When he got to where the last verse should have been, he sang the chorus again.
Then again.
Then he stopped.
The crowd clapped, a beat late.
He sang "Porch Light."
Chorus, chorus, stop.
Song four. Song six. Song nine.
Every one of them ran out before it was over.
A woman near the front leaned over to her husband and frowned.
People started checking their phones between songs.
"Last one, y'all," Breckin said. "This one's about the river. 'Cumberland in the Rain.'"
