On Saturday morning I walked into the Morning Glory Diner alone, the same as the Tuesday before.
The bell on the door jingled.
Every head turned, and this time every face was turned up.
"Mrs. Reichert," the owner called from the counter, in her green apron. "Your stool's waiting."
Someone had put a handwritten card on it that said RESERVED.
I sat down, and a mug of coffee arrived before I could ask.
"Two dollars," I said, and reached for my wallet.
"On the house. Whole menu. For as long as you're in this county."
"That's not necessary."
"It is." She leaned both elbows on the counter. "I said I wouldn't serve you. I've been sick about it since Tuesday."
"You poured the coffee."
"Slopped it," she said. "On purpose. I'd like to be forgiven for that, if it's all the same."
I laughed.
