Chapter 24: June
We were married on the second Saturday in June, at sunset, on the end of the dock.
Eighty folding chairs stood in rows on the planks, and the whole yard had come in its best clothes.
The crew wore ties.
One of them had borrowed his tie from the kid who sweeps and kept pulling at it.
My father stood beside me at the top of the aisle in his good suit with a handkerchief in his breast pocket, where I had put it.
"Don't," I whispered.
"I'm fine."
"You're already crying."
"It's the wind."
"There isn't any wind."
"Then it's the lake," he said, and his chin shook.
I wore a plain ivory dress and my mother's gold hoop in my left ear.
The harbor board's chairwoman stood in front of the water with a binder.
And at the end of the aisle, in a gray suit that fit him badly in the shoulders, stood Gabe.
He was not looking at the lake or at the crowd.
He was looking at me.
My father walked me down the planks with his arm shaking under my hand.
At the end he stopped.
"Who gives this woman?" said the chairwoman.
"Her father does," my father said, hoarse. "And her mother, too, I think. She's here somewhere."
He kissed my cheek, put my hand in Gabe's and sat down in the front row.
He blew his nose so loudly that someone laughed.
Gabe's hand was steady and warm.
We said the words.
When it came to his turn, he said them plainly, with no paper.
"I'll love you in the daylight," he said. "I'll love you in the dark. I'll drive you wherever you want to go, and I'll tell you the truth the whole way."
I could not see him properly through the tears.
"I'll take that," I said.
