Chapter 18: The Cell
The tea was bitter and hot, and Ye-han drank it standing, because Mi-rae did not give him time to sit.
"Listen," she said.
"The Hall Elder has the Leader's seal, and he has taken the guard rolls with it.
"Every man on this wing answers to his captain.
"The captain keeps the key to the Leader's cell on his belt."
"Where is the Leader?"
"Two doors down.
"In irons, with a man outside who has a wife and four children and no love for the Hall Elder's pay."
She put a purse in his hand.
It was soft and heavy, and it clinked.
"Chun-sik's savings.
"Thirty years of cooking for you, in coins."
Ye-han closed his fingers on it.
For a moment he could not speak.
"The captain goes off shift at the bell of the fourth watch," Mi-rae said.
"He eats a bowl of noodles in the kitchen before he does.
"Dam Chun-sik is making the noodles."
"And the key?"
"Chun-sik has been a cook for thirty years.
"He has also, you will not be surprised to hear, been a pickpocket for longer."
Ye-han laughed, once, and it hurt.
"You have until the bell.
"I will be at the water gate with a boat.
"Do not be late."
The guard at the stair was a thin, tired man with a spear he leaned on.
Ye-han put the purse into his hand without a word.
The guard weighed it.
Then he took a ring of keys off his belt, and unlocked the door two cells down, and looked at the wall.
"One bell's worth," he said.
"I will be at the top of the stairs.
"If I cough, you are not here."
