Chapter 23: The Seat

Ye-han got his legs off Gyeong-wook's shoulders so fast he kicked him in the chest.

"Get up," he said to Ju-won.

"Get up this instant.

"Do not kneel on a cold floor with your arm in a sling."

"Elder brother," said Ju-won, to the flagstones.

Ye-han's mouth shut.

He had gone red from the collar to the hair.

He pulled the ruined silk across his lap.

Gyeong-wook had never been so calm in his life.

He rose, put his own robe over Ye-han's shoulders, and offered Ju-won a hand.

"Please stand," he said.

"He cannot stand up himself, and he is too proud to say it."

Ju-won stayed on his knees.

"For nineteen years you were in front of the knives," he said, "so I could ink a ledger in a quiet room.

"I would like to say that to you on my knees, once, before anyone ever says it to me on theirs."

Ye-han could not speak.

Chun-sik, in the doorway, wiped his face with his apron.

"Ju-won," Ye-han said at last, and his voice came out thin.

"You owe me nothing."

"I know."

Ju-won looked up.

He had the old Lord's brows and a freckled round face, and he was grinning.

"That is why I am doing it."

Ye-han bent and took his good arm and pulled him up.

He put his arms round him, and Ju-won held on as hard as his shoulder would allow.

The Cult came to the white field the next morning.

They came in good order, a hundred and fifty men in black with crimson sashes.
