Chapter 11: The Cut

The boy was fast.

He came through the curtain low and straight.

The General was reaching for his sword, but it lay across the carriage in its scabbard, on the wrong side of Ji-hwan.

He was not going to reach it in time.

Ji-hwan knew it.

He threw himself forward.

The blade went through his sleeve and into the meat of his left arm, hot and then cold.

He screamed and kicked the boy in the knee with everything he had.

The boy stumbled.

The General roared and came out of the carriage.

The boy took one look at him, dropped the knife and ran into the dark.

Three of the guard went after him.

"Let him go," the General snapped, and then, softer, "let him go.

"Get the surgeon."

Ji-hwan sat on the carriage step with blood running down his wrist into his palm.

The General crouched in front of him.

He held Ji-hwan's arm in both hands and turned it to the lantern, and his fingers shook harder than Ji-hwan's.

"It's shallow," he said.

"It's shallow.

"It's shallow."

"General."

"You stepped in front of a knife."

"I'd like it noted that I'm an idiot."

The General's breath caught in something that was almost a laugh and almost not.

He cut his own sash with the dropped knife.

He wound it around Ji-hwan's arm and tied it off with great gentleness.

He carried Ji-hwan up to the bedchamber in his arms and refused to put him down until he was on the bedding.

The surgeon came, stitched the cut closed, and went away.

Then it was quiet.

The General knelt by the bed with his big hands open on his knees, and he looked at Ji-hwan with that terrible steady look.

"Who was he?" he said.

"Who sent him?"

Ji-hwan had planned to lie.

He had done it for eleven days.

He looked at the General's face, and the lie would not come up.

"A boy from the Hall of Nine Strings," he said.

"The keeper's second spy.

"The man who sent me sent him."

"The keeper wants me dead."

"Yes."

"And you were sent first."

"Yes."

The General did not move.

"I was sent to find the tally," Ji-hwan said, "and to kill you if I could.

"I have not told you the rest, and you may call the guards when you have heard it."
