Chapter 16: The Old Lady
The old lady Ma lived in a small house with a plum tree, two hours outside the city wall.
She opened the gate herself at dawn, a tiny woman in white with a stick.
She looked up at Ji-hwan.
"You are the boy from Cheongseong," she said.
"I have been expecting someone from there for six years."
Eo Hae-jun, behind Ji-hwan, made a small noise of awe.
Ji-hwan bowed, and he did not know what else to do.
She took them into a room with a brazier and gave them hot barley tea.
Her hands shook when she poured, but her eyes did not.
"Seong has my letter," she said.
"I know.
"My servant saw a man in plum silk ride away from the post-house with it."
"He will come here to make you swear the General stole your son's name," Ji-hwan said.
"Let him come," she said.
"My son's name was a dirty thing even before he died."
She looked at the brazier.
"He was a cruel child.
"He pulled the wings off the kitchen birds and made the cook's boys eat from the floor.
"I did not teach him that, and I did not stop him, and I have had six years to know what I am."
