Chapter 22: The Rowing Song at Court
Ji-hwan sat down on the cold floor in the middle of the Council hall and took the gayageum off his back.
A hundred officials watched a musician tune a zither.
His hands were not steady, and he did not wait for them to be.
He did not play the court piece.
He played the boatman's song, from the first verse, slow, with the water slapping the hull.
He had played it in a bedchamber and a pavilion and a carriage, and he had never played it for a king.
He played it for Dol-soe, who stood beside him, bareheaded, with his eyes shut.
By the second verse Dol-soe was singing under his breath, in the rice-country voice, so low that only Ji-hwan could hear.
Then Ji-hwan heard something else.
It came through the hall doors from the great palace yard, faint at first, a rumble.
It was a man's voice, and then forty, and then more.
"Heave," they sang.
"Heave."
The men who had carried the roll south were standing in the yard in the cold.
The palace guards on the walls knew the song too.
It rolled over the palace roofs.
It shook the lacquer on the pillars.
Hundreds of soldiers sang the rowing song at the gates of the king.
