They were married in the snow at the Northern Gate of Cheongseong, under the crossbeam where Ji-hwan's father had hung.
The soldiers had swept the yard down to the stones.
The Baek men stood in rows on one side of it with their caps in their hands.
The warden's company stood on the other, in clean coats.
Ji-hwan's mother had cut the red cord herself, and his sisters held the ends of it.
In the front row sat the old lady Ma in her white wool, on a chair someone had carried up from the city.
She had insisted on coming, and she had told the king so.
Dol-soe stood before Ji-hwan in a plain blue wedding coat with his hat off and his beard trimmed.
His hands were shaking.
A table had been set between them with a bowl of water, two cups and a sheet of paper.
"The names go on the paper," Ji-hwan's mother said.
"In your own hands."
Ji-hwan wrote his first.
It was the clear square script he had learned at five, and it flowed.
Then he handed Dol-soe the brush.
Dol-soe took it in his right hand, in front of the whole clan and the whole garrison.
He bent over the table, and the yard was so silent that Ji-hwan could hear the bristles on the paper.
Dol-soe wrote his name.
The strokes were heavy and square, and the last hook was as sharp as a fish bone.
