Chapter 17: Her Father's Frames
My father stood at the Watchhouse gate in the snow with a stack of white bee frames in his arms.
He was sixty-three, and he had dropped timber for forty years, and he still stood as straight as a spar.
We came down the path with our hair wet and steam coming off our coats.
He looked at the three of us and did not need to ask where we had been.
"Dad," I said.
"Linnea."
"You drove up the north road in this."
"I brought you frames," he said. "For the spring. The hives you left are strong, and I thought you would want them started right."
He held them out.
I took the frames, and my hands were not steady.
A jar of last summer's honey sat in the crook of his other arm, and he gave me that, too.
Mikkel's hand settled on the small of my back, warm through my coat.
