Chapter 15: What the Aunt Signed
The dining room stayed silent while the aunt's cane lay on the carpet where it had fallen.
Elliot picked it up and put it in her hand.
"Margot," the aunt said. "I put my name to your story three years ago, and I have been proud of it ever since."
"Because it was a kindness."
"Because I believed my nephew had been brave enough to ask for help."
She turned her head toward the head of the table.
"Counsel. The letter the family sent to Nina Cheston. The one that said the money was paid 'in consideration of the marriage.'
"Who told you to write that?"
The lawyer cleared his throat.
"Mrs. Rainer instructed me."
"Not Elliot."
"Mr. Rainer was not consulted."
"Did the form I signed say anything about a marriage?"
"No, madam. It says a gift."
Margot sat straight in her chair.
"This is a family matter," she said, "and I am being ambushed."
"You are being read your own paper." The aunt's voice did not rise.
"Under my brother's trust, a trustee who lies to the other trustee can be removed by that trustee. I am the other trustee.
"I am removing you."
"You can't."
"Counsel?"
"She can," the lawyer said, and he looked at the table. "The deed allows it."
Margot laughed, one hard sound.
It was the first time I had heard her laugh without sweetness in it.
"You old fool," she said. "Do you know what I've carried? Thirty years in this house, and my husband's name on everything, and a son who couldn't look up from his desk.
