Chapter 6: The Tail Has Opinions

Caspian's temporary residence was a narrow townhouse in the middle of the main city, and Leo was waiting on the front step.

He was holding a rocking chair.

It was a very nice rocking chair, pale wood, with a wicker seat.

"Carys," he said, and his whole face lit up. "I'm so glad to see you two together."

"He's burning up," I said. "The wound reopened. Take his other arm."

Leo set the chair down on the step and came running.

Together we got Caspian through the door and onto the sofa in the front room.

He opened his eyes once, looked at the ceiling and said in a perfectly polite voice, "Thank you, Ms. Winslow."

Then he shut them again.

I stood up and wiped my hands on my coat.

"There is a doctor on call?"

"On her way," Leo said. "She says the stitches pulled. It's nothing serious. It's only a lot of blood."

"That's what serious people say."

"Please stay until she comes," Leo said. "Please. Just ten minutes."

I looked at Caspian, flat on his back with one pale hand hanging over the cushion.

Ten minutes turned into two hours.

The doctor stitched him up, scolded the entire room, left a list of medicines and went home.

Leo went to make tea and came back with an entire tray of sandwiches he had apparently bought for a different emergency.
