Chapter 12: Say It

Preston found my building on Tuesday night, at ten past eleven.

I knew it was him before I opened the door, because he kept leaning on the buzzer.

Ingrid looked up from her laptop on the sofa.

"Don't," she said. "Don't open it."

"He'll wake the neighbors."

"Then I'm recording," she said, and held up her phone.

I opened the door.

He stood in the stairwell with his ankle in a black boot and a camera on a stick in his hand, swaying slightly.

He smelled like whiskey, and his shirt was buttoned wrong.

The red light on the camera was on.

"Hey, everybody," he said, to the lens. "We made it. This is Elias's actual apartment. Say hi, Elias."

"Preston, go home."

"I don't have one." He laughed, high and loud. "I'm living on a friend's couch. Do you know how many sponsors I have left? Do you want to guess?"

"No."

"Zero." He swung the camera toward me. "That's the number. And you won't say one thing to fix it."

"I'm not going to say anything."

"You could say it was a bit." His voice cracked. "You could say we all knew it was a game. You could say you're jealous, even, like you always did. Just say you're jealous, Elias. That's all it was ever for."

The stairwell light buzzed.

A door opened two floors up, and then another one.

I looked at the camera.
