Chapter 9: I'm Fine
The caseworker was a woman in her fifties with a canvas bag and reading glasses pushed up into short gray hair.
She sat at Aunt Dot's long table, between the carved blocks and the clipped prints, and put a folder on top of a woodcut of a fox.
"I'm sorry to turn up on a Sunday morning," she said. "A report came in last night, and I like to see a child within a day."
"Of course," Aunt Dot said. "Coffee?"
"Please."
She said nothing while Aunt Dot poured it, and neither did I.
I had put on a clean shirt without anyone asking.
"The report says Zack was taken from his parents' care without their consent," the caseworker said. "It says he was kept from a prescription and was being turned against his family."
"What prescription?" I asked.
"It doesn't say."
"I don't take any prescription."
"I thought that might be the case." She wrote something down. "I also have notes from the hospital social worker on Monday. I'd like to hear it from you directly, Zack. Are you all right here?"
"I'm fine, thank you."
It came out of my mouth before I even decided to say it.
It's the thing I always say, with the same soft smile that goes with it.
The caseworker looked at me.
She did not write anything down.
"Fine," she said.
"Yes, ma'am. Everyone's been very kind."
"I'm sure they have. And at home? Before?"
"I'm fine there too."
Beside me, Aunt Dot set her coffee down.
She didn't look at me.
She looked at the fox on the table, and she said, almost to herself, "You get to want things here."
