Chapter 7: Sunday Dinner
The wax seal broke under my thumb in the hospital parking lot.
Inside the envelope lay a heavy gold brooch set with one green stone, and a card in a spidery old hand.
"For the mother of my heir. Wear it to my table."
Renzo took one look at it and swore under his breath.
"What is it?" I asked.
"My grandmother's emerald. My mother wore it when she had me."
"And Dario's mother wore it for Dario?"
"No," he said. "Only for the first."
I turned the brooch in the light.
It was beautiful and old and warm from the lawyer's hand.
It was also a very clear message to thirty people about whose belly mattered.
"Then I'll wear it," I said.
"Casey."
"They'll look at it all night and think it means I'm theirs. I want to see their faces when it doesn't."
Renzo said nothing for a long moment, and then he opened the door of his truck.
We stopped at a mall outside Scranton and I bought the first dress on the rack that fit, a plain dark green one with long sleeves that covered my arm.
I pinned the emerald at my collarbone in the dressing room.
I looked at the woman in the mirror.
She did not look kept.
By five o'clock we were back in New Jersey, and the truck turned onto the long drive of the house where I had eaten every Sunday for six years.
Cars lined both sides of the gravel.
The windows blazed, and from the open front door came the clatter of plates and a great many voices, all speaking Italian.
