Chapter 4: Sign It

I took Hannah's warning out into the hall with me, and I didn't know what to do with it.

Lorna followed and pulled the door nearly closed behind her.

"Thank you for coming," she said. "I mean it. I know what today was."

The corridor was lit white and humming.

A man in a wheelchair sat by the water fountain, a young mother held a sleeping toddler near the vending machine, and two nurses were charting at the desk.

I opened my bag and took out the divorce agreement and a pen.

"Sign it," I said. "Stay with them as long as you like. After this it's none of my business."

Lorna looked at the pen without taking it.

Her voice went low. "You're using a divorce to threaten me."

"I'm not threatening you."

"Then what is it?"

"I can't be with you anymore."

I put the papers into her hands, and she let them fall against her hip.

"We've been fine for seven years," she said. "You never complained once. And suddenly we're not?"

The door behind her opened, and Russ came out with his glasses in his hand.

He stepped in front of her, between us, and his eyes were wet.

"Elliot, forgive me for asking. Have you met someone else?"

I stared at him.

"Lorna hasn't been home much, I know that. But she has always cared about you. You didn't wait seven years just to throw it away for somebody you met on a train."

Lorna nodded along with him.
