Chapter 28: Mrs. Corvane

My mother asked to see me on neutral ground, and the only ground in the valley that belonged to nobody was the Pinecrest Moot Hall.

The Elder sat at the long table under the board where Daphne's gold rank had once been chalked.

The board was blank now.

"No Alphas in this hall today," he had told Ewan at the door. "Not yours, and not hers."

So Ewan waited outside with his arms folded against the truck, and Brigid came in on my arm.

Twenty or thirty Pinecrest wolves sat along the benches.

They had come to watch, and none of them pretended otherwise.

Judith walked in alone.

She wore a grey Greywater coat and a clean white blouse, and her left hand was in its black leather glove.

She looked well.

That was the first thing that hit me, and it hit hard.

She looked rested and well fed, and her skin had colour.

"Thea," she said. "You've gotten thin."

"I eat four times a day."

"You look tired."

"I sleep better than I ever did."

Her smile did not move.

She put her gloved hand on the end of the table, and I saw the Elder watch it.

"I'll be brief, since you've no patience for me," she said. "Hamish has been generous. He has promised me a house on the lake. My name goes on his table, and nobody in Greywater cares what Pinecrest said."

"I'm glad for you."

"He'd do the same for you."

"I've heard the offer."

"You've heard part of it." She leaned in, soft and earnest, the way she used to when she brought the tea. "He isn't well, darling. He's been alone since his wife died. All he asks is that you sit at his table once a month. A strong wolf in the room is a comfort to a sick man."
