Chapter 6: Friday

On Friday the Moot Hall was so full that people stood against the walls.

Two hundred Pinecrest wolves had come to see whether the Corvane girl would be handed back.

Ewan walked in beside me, with six Strathmore wolves behind us in grey jackets.

He didn't touch me. He had promised, and he kept it.

But my wolf felt every step he took.

The Council sat at the long table under the board where my sister's gold rank was still chalked.

There were three of them in black coats, and the old Elder sat at their end.

My parents sat in the front row.

My mother wore black and a veil, and she had a tissue pressed to her mouth.

Dad sat beside her, staring at his boots.

Daphne sat on the end in a grey sweater, so thin I hardly knew her.

She would not look at me.

"We are here on the petition of Judith and Alden Corvane," the senior Council member said. "They ask that the Hearth Severing of their daughter Thea be voided, on the grounds that she was ill and not herself."

My mother stood, dabbing her eyes.

"I only want my baby home," she said. Her voice shook beautifully. "She's eighteen and she's been through such a shock. A girl who has just been told she has no wolf will do anything. I would never have let the Elder cut her off if I had known she'd take the knife herself."

The room murmured in sympathy.

I looked at her black veil, and I wanted to put my fist through it.

"Thea Corvane," the senior member said. "You may answer."

I stood up.

My hands were sweating, but my voice came out steady.
