The Friday call ran forty minutes and nobody canceled a contract.

The marketing director said five words on it, "We're staying with the agency," and then she hung up.

By six o'clock the ninth floor had emptied to a few late typists and the cleaning crew's cart.

I sat at my desk with the list unfolded under my keyboard, trying to decide which of the eleven to call first.

I didn't hear him come.

"Callie."

Anson stood at the edge of my cubicle in his shirtsleeves with his hands at his sides.

Forty people were still on the floor.

I saw two of them stop typing.

"I said I'd say something out loud," he said. "I'm going to do it here."

"Anson, we can go to a conference room."

"No."

He said it gently, and he didn't move.

"I came to this desk to ask you to dinner."

"I'd rather you said no in front of all of them than never be asked."

A chair creaked somewhere behind him.

"I'm not here to forgive you. I'm not there yet, and I won't pretend. But I know what I want."

"What do you want?"

"You," he said. "Not the student. Not the lesson. Not the girl in the red dress."
